US Congressman Jackie Walorski (R-IN) led a bipartisan organization to urge the US federal government to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed on Canada and Mexico because they violated recent trade agreements with countries that took retaliatory measures. Against the United States.
“American farmers, manufacturers, workers and consumers will continue to suffer, especially through retaliatory measures, until an agreement to lift the tariff is reached,” said Wall Wolsky and the other seven members of the US House Ways and Means Committee. Written in a letter to the US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer on December 18.
Specifically, members asked Lighthizer to reach a negotiated settlement on the steel and aluminum tariffs set by the US government this year for Mexico and Canada under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Extension Act.
They pointed out that the government's previous tariffs on Canada and Mexico were "successful in the negotiations to update the North American Free Trade Agreement" throughout 2018.
US President Trump used Article 232 to impose tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum, after the US Department of Commerce survey showed that metals pose a threat to US national security because they lower the US industrial base. Trump also uses Section 232 to prove whether investigating imported uranium and cars poses a national security threat and should be restricted.
Although Trump recently signed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), "tariffs - and retaliation from Mexico and Canada - still exist," the legislators said.
Members of the House of Representatives told the Office of the US Trade Representative that they looked forward to more discussions on this situation, "because we will continue to review all aspects of USMCA."
